After Initial Success, Helldiver’s 2 Has Lost 90% Of Its Players With No Signs Of Recovery

Forbes: "Helldivers 2 was meant to be Sony's big push into live gaming, but after initial success, has lost a significant amount of players."

TheNamelessOne8d ago

This tends to happen to almost all games of this kind. Quality or no.

just_looken8d ago

Though true to a point this game was killed off by the sony tos remember to this day you can not play and or buy this game still in countries without psn even though psn id is not needed.

Have we all forgotten what happened in may
https://www.pcgamer.com/har...

Its like that one week or so of blowback over helldivers 2 needing a account then them going ok no account was enough because again sony. All they did was temporarily allow you to play without a account in a country that was allowed by sony.

Look at all sony titles pre/after psn account requirement they all suffered massive player drops this is not news just fact sony hate its player's and retroactively hurt there sales.

AsimLionheart8d ago

Live service games NEVER maintain their peak player counts from launch period hype and always lose majority of the initial influx of players. Remember Palworld? Palworld had 2mil, then it had 15k, now it has 140k. The game is still hanging around. In the end the loyal fanbase carries the game for the rest of its life after casuals leave

just_looken8d ago

@AsimLionheart

This has nothing to do with live service in this situation its do too sony not allowing 170 countries access to the game like i said all other sony titles that got the same change also saw number's drop.

just_looken7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Wow so ok according to this site the entire population of the world is in America right?

You all think AsimLionheart is right removing access to 170 countries is great idea sony is at no fault because no one ever lived there?

So the whole 30 thousand plus getting banned from using the game outside of the 90 countries that are supported by psn has no impact on the play numbers right.

Once again sony no wrong because n4g hell divers 2 numbers dropped not because of sony restrictions no its because of players not being American therefor not having access to there game that they purchased. I use America sense its the only country that has no govtid restriction and or no console needed requirement.

I can not say japan because all of asia is on the ban list...

AsimLionheart7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

"Wow so ok according to this site the entire population of the world is in America right?"

The entire population of the world is not in America but the entire gaming market is definitely located in the developed countries. The countries that were blocked are mostly third world countries where Sony has no official presence because the market is non-existent or too small to care about. My country is on that list too. The people here are just too poor to care about playing video games. They can't even understand English or any other major world language. Only a lucky few like me who were born into middle-class or wealthier families and got a good education are the ones who can afford and care about playing video games. The market is too small in such countries so Sony doesn't care if the 4 people in my country playing Helldivers 2 previously can't play it anymore. They never mattered in the first place. Do you really think people living in Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan made a huge part of the player base?

@GamingSinceForever

Oh here comes grammar cops spending there life justifying that Diploma.

@Pixykont

Oh here we go i am talking facts but its about sony so i am labeled as a "hater"

@AsimLionheart

So what your saying is gaming is a privilege that locking it down to what you call "underdeveloped" counties is great fuck them right lets just skip over the fact they were all playing this game and other steam games 0 issues still are playing non psn games just fine.

But you are coming off as a American with that attitude look at all the population here they have internet/steam and were playing it fine before but nope you and it looks like alot more hate these "underdeveloped" people makes sense with your countries track record.

I am stating that one week they all played the game said game had tens of thousands playing well over 100 peak then sony banned/block them all and now the population of the game had a massive decrease in player count.

You can't argue with sonyboys, sony can do no wrong.
Sony is also killing off blu ray so when ps6 is digital only what will the boot lickers say then?

I'm surprised the blu ray story isn't on this site.

Just remember one thing, when ps6 is digital only, it won't be bc with your physical media... just saying.

BlackTar1877d ago

@jack

Wow you sound so neutral lol. Relax

IRetrouk7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

@jack, recordable media including blank bluray discs, ie self writing media, not discs for games and movies... atleast read the stories first eh?
Sony don't even produce most of the discs for bluray, they outsource them....

AsimLionheart7d ago

"So what your saying is gaming is a privilege that locking it down to what you call "underdeveloped" counties is great fuck them right lets just skip over the fact they were all playing this game and other Steam games 0 issues"

I think you are a little confused here. Do you understand what a game being "delisted" means? Nobody from those countries has been blocked out of Helldivers 2. People who bought the game and have it installed can STILL play it just fine. Sony delisted the game in unsupported countries which means that you cannot purchase it or download it anymore. That only means no new players can enter the player base.

https://www.destructoid.com...

https://www.reddit.com/r/He...

Secondly, this is not some outrageous decision coming out of the left field. There are tons of games that are not available for purchase in various countries. One Helldivers 2 player from Russia stated in the above Reddit thread that more than half of the Steam Library is not available for purchase in their country due to various reasons. Similarly, many games are delisted in the Middle East which contain offensive material for those cultures. Any company is well within its rights to decide where it wants to sell its product.

Finally, the argument was if there were enough Helldivers 2 customers in those countries to lead to a drastic decline in the player base if they were blocked out of the game. However, all those players who have the game on their PCs can still play it which makes your argument moot. Furthermore, the fact remains that the number of players in all those countries makes up only a tiny and inconsequential portion of the total player base. Therefore, they cant possibly be responsible for the decline in playerbase as you claim.

shinoff21837d ago (Edited 7d ago )

@just looken

You say banned in 170 countries

Then you say psn allowed in 90 countries

Well wtf one is it cause there's only 195 or so countries in the world

Also alot of us said the sht was stupid. We also find it odd though cause sonys not the only one to take the approach.

Magatsuhi7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Your information is wrong. HD2 was declining before the psn controversy. Sony gave AH permission on how to proceed with their game following the network issues that plagued the launch if the game. In other words, AH decided to remove the psn requirement temporarily without properly informing customers about its eventual requirement. AH is at fault here, NOT Sony.

The game mostly died because of poor balance choices that continue to this day as well as bad community management where AH employees would behave condescending towards players. The game become boring and repetitive for most people, end of story!

Furthermore, to your point about the locked players, as stated before the game was on decline before the controversy and therefore before players were blocked from buying the game. Meaning the game had already peaked before the game was locked out of certain countries so that is not the reason the game has poor numbers. Not to mention, Sony only locked the ability to purchase within those countries, the players who already own the game can continue to play it.

You can stop parroting MS talking points now.

Helldivers 2 was actually never meant to be Sony's big push that's hyperbole it was a unintentional hit.

These numbers are based on steam charts also the players counts on PlayStation feel healthy enough.

Steam charts are not a great indicator for game health when it comes to multiplat games especially when the PC edition has been hit with multiple controversies while the ps5 version has been smooth sailing.

As an example call of duty will have low active player counts on PC when it used to come to steam but have hundreds of thousands of active console players at any given time

arkard7d ago

Exactly, they were anticipating maybe 500k in sales and sold something like 12 million. They will be ok

DodoDojo7d ago

"if you've lost that many players it was clearly either pushed out the door early when the final vision couldn't be realised or not that good."

cloganart7d ago

How many more dead/failed GaaS games do we need?

Sadly, Steam Charts are a great indicator of health. GaaS will always suffer unless you have a dedicated team the size of Bungie.

Companies need to invest back in Single Player games with co-op modes.

Lexreborn27d ago

All steam charts are good for is letting you know how many at any given time are playing ON PC! No one has the numbers for consoles and crossplay makes the argument moot

It happened when Sony pushed the PSN account shit. Terrible move that could have cost them a lot of money.

just_looken8d ago

exactly all there titles have had mass player drops after that bs move.

Walalon7d ago

This was one of the things that's probably plummeted their numbers. On the other hand I was reading the guy that helps "balance" the game is the same that worked on Hello Neighbor 2 and have a bad reputation on the same term on that game... And the other thing is clearly we have ton of games to enjoy too and people got tired, I'm probably going back to the game in a couple of months after my Shadow of the eertree fever goes off.

rippermcrip7d ago

All you have to do is look at the graph to see how that "PSN account shit" meant nothing. The fiasco was end of April/beginning of May.

Magatsuhi7d ago

Wrong! The game was declining before the whole fiasco. Anyone that says otherwise is a fool or a liar.

That's unfortunate but helldivers 2 is an amazing game with the publisher being dumb

TheProfessional7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

No this was just way overhyped from the start; it's a simplistic wave mode that would be dlc in any other game. Levels are bland and empty, missions are way too long and it has no real customization.

cell9897d ago

There's nothing like Helldivers 2 currently. You calling it DLC shows how much you're full of it lol.

DarXyde8d ago

The thing about Live service games is that, as long as content is being made and the servers are active, they don't really go away. It is not uncommon for these kinds of games to have a lot of drop in/drop out.

Hypothetically, even if the servers got killed tomorrow, this game is far from a failure. It was profitable pretty early on.

Seriously, how do articles like this get approved? It's two quotes from Reddit.

Luc2018h ago

Written by AI for clicks. They don't have the talent to write anything interesting.When you see 'some gamers', 'gamer' etc in the title you know who wrote it

OMGitzThatGuy17h ago

Like Luc20 said, AI garbage articles from a website owned by the same trash corp that owns N4G so no form of moderation is done. They shouldn't even be allowed to post to here as it could just create conflict of interest in promoting that trash site over other more organic submitted works.
