The DualSense Controller Was Underutilized in 2021

The DualSense controller is one of the most attractive aspects of the PlayStation 5, but very few games have used it to its full potential.

It will get more recognition in 22 and beyond. Its a great feeling controller.

XbladeTeddy918d ago

It will go the same way gyro on the Dualshock 4 went, underutilized and ignored mostly. Just how it will be. No one uses the Switch's version to its potential either.

gravedigger918d ago

Not you, but Darth. Sorry.

XbladeTeddy918d ago

Oh, sorry lol. Get confused on who replies to who sometimes.

Kekewei918d ago

Please don't say dualsense 5 is gimmick, it's not like gyro or anything before. You will never forget the experience once you try it. I believe Microsoft will have their own implement, might even do better than Sony , and xbox fans would love it surely. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will not be just the Sony thing... they can be future for all gamers.

gravedigger918d ago (Edited 918d ago )

Autor is wrong on so many levels. Over 180 games are using DualSense features, some way more extensively, some less. Autor extensively ignored Returnal, Kena, CODs, Demons, Sackboy, Godfall, Alan Wake, Borderlands, Resident Evil, Far Cry, WRCs, Dirt, Guilty Gear, Battlefield, Mortal Shell and what not.

For 1st/2nd party, it is pretty much a given. 3rd may or may not, depending on if their game is multiplat.

It was like that last gen with xbo and rumble triggers. Sadly there werent enough 1st/2nd party games to use them as well. Something I hope is also addressed this gen. When done right, its cool feeling.

.....

And you are wrong too. Bunch of 3rd party games are using DualSense. Didn't you said you have a PS5?

XbladeTeddy918d ago

I've never said I have a PS5 simply because I've...never had a PS5.

darthv72918d ago (Edited 918d ago )

I said 3rd party may/not, but not all will. I wasnt insulting it but you make it like I did.

Who said that you've insulted someone?

I think what the author is implying is that most of those games [you listed] really made no difference. Especially if they were also on the series, which lacks the same complexity of haptics. So basically it really was under used but that can change if Sony wants to change it.

Just being tacked on doesnt really count, and you know that.

.....

Even if DualSense features are used in game in some small extension, it can be counted as a game that is using DS features. I've said before that some games are using DS features extensively, some games less, but still holds it.
Comparing the same games on XS and PS5 regarding utilizing gamepad features are totally obtuse. WRCs and Dirt and F1 2021 are totally utilizing haptics and adaptive triggers. Claiming that they are not using DualSense features ( but they are, HEAVILY) because these games are on XS and lack of the same features ( of course it doesn't because XS doesn't have the same tech) are really idiotic at least.
So, looks like Xbox fans trying to do a spin saying if some game doesn't use rumble triggers on Xbox gamepad on XS, then DualSense features aren't utilized too. Take your spin, Xbox fans, to your Xbox fantasy land.

I turn off the haptics in the triggers. It has a fake feeling and I don’t enjoy it. The rumble in the rest of the controller is great though.

I wish they made it mandatory for developers to utilize the controller features. Such great haptics to not be fully utilized.

Nah, that's no good. I think that interferes with creative freedom. If developers are smart, they'll see the swelling support for the haptics and take advantage of it.

It is unfortunate to see it under utilized, but
we can only hope developers are paying attention to the consumer feedback and do more to enhance their names voluntarily.

specialguest918d ago

Mandatory?? That's a bad idea. You can't force a developer to utilize it just for the sake of it being required by contract. I don't want some half-assed haptic affect that does nothing for the experience except being a distraction

Best gamepad on the market right now.

You missed IMO off the end of you're opinion.

-Foxtrot919d ago

I hope developers use it more, all last gen we heard developers say they wanted something that would make games feel more immersive yet now they have something to experiment with.

It's something that doesn't feel too gimmick like and if you don't want to use it you can simply turn it off.

dbcoops919d ago

I'm sure it will be used more and more as the generation progresses.

Day one buy ..
Too bad most devs do not take advantage of the controller’s haptics

CrimsonWing6922d ago

I hate that not many have taken advantage of the dual sense.

badz14921d ago

exclusive features like those featured by the Dualsense will only be maximized by Sony's own team, sadly. And they definitely need to do it or it will become an afterthought by the end of this gen with other devs not bothered taking advantage of the unique features. that's exactly the problem with the PS Vita. not enough devs (not even Sony's) are willing to push the envelop when it comes to its features passed the launch period. games like Uncharted GA which uses the Vita to its full capabilities are almost non-existent. even the power is underutilized.

CantThinkOfAUsername21d ago

They're struggling with putting out a finished game let alone implementing exclusive features.

Zenzuu21d ago

How are games like Horizon Forbidden West, Demon Souls, Ratchet & Clank, Spider Man, God of War Ragnarok, Returnal, Sackboy A Big Adventure and such unfinished?

jznrpg21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

They did a great job with the demo version I would guess with all this time they really push it now. Unfortunately nobody else does it. It really can make a big difference in immersion but it isn’t used beyond rumble , speaker and the touchpad as a button

Jingsing21d ago

It will be the second PS5 exclusive game. "Maybe" :/

Gabrielmpf21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Steering with the controller in GT7 is a game changer.
I've since played WipeOut and Project Cars 3 with gyro steering, and also loved it.
Wish more racing games used this feature
